Barbarians at the Gate: The Fall of RJR Nabisco

Today I finished reading this book by Bryan Burrough & John Helyar. It is a great read and came highly recommended by several professors and friends. The players involved are numerous and initially proved difficult to keep straight... However, each person had their own quirks and background which made them stand out and eventually easily discernable. The story obviously revolves around Ross Johnson but brings in merger giants from First Boston, KKR, and essentially every major bank. The authors provide a nice (shorter than I would have preferred) summary of the financial products and analysis used to measure the company, develop the securities, and risk involved. The events being dramatic is an understatement.

I took away a far better understanding about Levered Buy Outs and how different companies can be bought and sold. The greed portion was a tad overplayed but obviously is a factor... Everyone looking out for their own self-interest allows the free market to work after all. Would highly recommend. *If you do read, make sure you read the footnotes. They provide invaluable information that makes the book that much better. Happy Reading!
